General Summary:
The Driver is responsible for organizing and driving group scheduled trips and handling individual resident requests. Vehicles assigned to this department shall also be maintained. The Driver reports to the Director of Community Life Services.

Essential Job Duties:
  • Encourage residents to participate in transportation programs of individual or group capacity.
  • Maintain current and accurate documentation on all residents participating in the transportation program.
  • Transport residents to and from programs using wheelchairs and walkers and assist and / or supervise those residents who require help with walking.
  • Utilize cell phones safely and effectively to communicate with schedulers and the Director of Community Life Services. 
  • Checks voice mail on a regular basis throughout the work day to avoid transportation problems.
  • Take care of state/federal requirements for vehicle registration, licenses, etc. Maintain record of all vehicles use as needed. Responsible for vehicle maintenance/repair needs. Maintain cleanliness of vehicles.
  • Communicate with Department Director, other transportation staff, and schedulers to design and maintain an effective monthly driving schedule.
  • Perform all tasks to assure passenger safety, personal safety and protection of Newcastle Place property.
Other Duties:
  • Report concerns of resident and families to the Community Life Services Director.
  • Keep records and schedule of individual resident requests and transports them to destination.
  • Keeps records of mileage and gas purchases and submit bills to appropriate Director.
  • Maintain all tools, equipment and supplies in proper condition.
  • All employees are expected to respond to emergency situations involving the safety of residents, other employees and our physical plant. This includes the ability to assist with a possible evacuation of residents.
  • All employees are responsible to adhere to all facility policy and procedures as they relate to compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Medicare Compliance. All employees are responsible to ensure that any Protected Health Information and Medicare Compliance Information that he/she comes in contact with is maintained in a confidential manner.
  • Abide by emergency, safety and health regulations. Eliminate or report all hazardous conditions as they occur.
  • Abide by all rules and policies set forth by the company and department.
  • Attends in-service training and education session, as assigned.
  • Employees are responsible to perform any other duties as assigned.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Prior related experience and experience in long-term care facility, preferred.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions in English, communicate effectively and perform simple arithmetic. Ability to document services, as needed.
  • Possesses ability to communicate effectively with residents, families and staff. Must use sound judgment, works well under pressure and possesses strong organizational skills.
  • CPR certification is required (will train)
  • CDL license may be required prior to employment. 
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • Must be also to sit in a vehicle for up to 6 hours per day; must be able to stoop, bend, stretch and squat to load and unload cargo areas. Perform routine preventive maintenance on vehicles according to schedule. Keep vehicles clean. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds for handling luggage and resident groceries. May be exposed to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat) for short periods of time. Must have good driving skills in handling vehicles on wet and/or slippery roads.
Equipment Utilized:
  • Common electric switches, wheelchairs, walkers, audio and audio-visual equipment, utility carts.
